For many years Erin and her family lived in London, so Thanksgiving was a special time to get together with other expats. During those years Erin came up with a lot of new recipes to add to the table – friends would bring their family favourites to share, so it was always something of an unexpected feast. Now back home with her US family, Erin has returned to traditional childhood favourites. Traditional in that we always have the staples: turkey, stuffing, mash potatoes and pies for dessert. After that I like to experiment and reinvent. Living in California Erin loves filling fruit bowls with lemons and clementines throughout the holiday season.
Since being back in the US (except for last year during Covid), we have gotten up early and taken part in a 5km ‘Turkey Trot’. It’s nice to start the day with a bit of exercise before indulging in a huge meal, but really it is just fun to be out with other members of your community and share in the celebratory mood. I love seeing other families gathering and starting the day together.
