In the Studio with Grace Butterfield

We're constantly surprised and inspired by our creative community. Grace Butterfield, an Australian artist with a background in interior design and fashion, draws inspiration from well-crafted aesthetics, emphasising attention to detail, timelessness, and composition – often painting Mud Australia in her works.

My work is an exploration of the many narratives embedded in the everyday objects that surround us. I have spent the last 12 months really painting all the things I love, the simple things. Composition has been a major focus of my current works and has resulted in each piece not being restricted by the edges of the canvas, but instead suggestive of what might surround. Colour and tone are always at the forefront of my mind and often where a painting begins. I am fascinated by the way in which objects can enrich a space, and at this point in my career, still life painting seems to make sense. I don’t feel a need to invent subject when we are surrounded by a world just overflowing with beautiful imagery. I am learning every day, and hope to continue to paint, draw, and photograph simple things and give them permanence.

Hi Grace, tell us about how you first discovered art?

"My mum was probably my earliest influence. Being an architect, our home was filled with beautiful colours and textures and mum would spend most weekends rearranging furniture and objects to create beautiful vignettes around our home. I inherited her handwriting and even though she won’t admit it, her ability to paint and draw.

I also remember one day when I was quite young picking up a book in our living room titled, ‘Morandi’ I was absolutely fascinated by his ability to paint the same objects over and over again, and yet make each painting so uniquely its own."

What do you love about painting still life?

"I love beautiful things. Often hand-made, and I find joy in navigating a balance between objects, colour, form, and texture. Still life scenes seem to provide me with a never-ending array of exactly this. I get more excited than most about the colour of a lemon or texture of a linen tea towel and it is these simple but beautiful everyday things that get me started.

Still life painting for me seems to make sense, I don’t feel a need to invent subject when we are surrounded by a world just overflowing with beautiful imagery."

Why do you like to paint Mud Australia ceramics?

"How could I not! They are the epitome of everything I look for in a ‘beautiful thing.’ The craftsmanship in each and every piece, the choice of colour palette, the subtle details of each product, and the clean, crisp lines.  I will never tire of painting these beautiful objects and I just hope I can continue to do them justice."
