MudTalks 10 — Offcuts, by-products & beautiful waste

A conversation on material afterlives and creative reuse.

To mark World Environment Day 2025, last week’s MudTalks gathered a thoughtful panel of voices in architecture, design, and material innovation to explore how waste can become a beginning.

From ceramic offcuts to salvaged brick, the conversation traced the possibilities of conscious design—how remnants, when reconsidered, can be transformed into lasting value.

Guided by Anne-Maree Sargeant (Authentic Design Alliance), Shelley Simpson (Mud Australia), Claire Kennedy (Five Mile Radius), Eve Castle (Brickworks), and Mark Simpson (DesignOffice) shared their approaches to reuse, rethinking, and responsible making—each revealing how design can lead by example, reshaping the way we build and live.

Held in our Marrickville studio with generous support from Brickworks, the evening was a timely reflection on process, progress, and the quiet power of re-use.
