A scent of place — Mud Australia x Powerhouse Made

Introducing two new candles created in collaboration with the Powerhouse, inspired by the planting palette of Powerhouse Parramatta's productive rooftop garden.

Created as part of Powerhouse Made™, a collection of original objects developed by Australian artists, designers and makers in response to the Powerhouse Collection, exhibitions and programs, the collaboration explores the relationship between scent, landscape and material.

Drawing on the botanical diversity of the rooftop garden, the two fragrances bring together native Australian plants and bush foods, translating elements of the Parramatta landscape into a sensory experience for the home.

Inspired by the landscape

Powerhouse Parramatta is the newest addition to the Powerhouse museum network, a major cultural destination exploring the intersections of art, design, science and technology. Its architecture and surrounding landscape create a setting for making, learning and exchange, with the productive rooftop garden offering a distinctive palette of native and cultivated plants.

This garden provided the starting point for the two fragrances, each developed around a selection of botanicals found within its planting scheme.

Candle Six, created in our signature Pistachio tinted porcelain, combines bush tomato, moss, blue flax lily and saltbush. Earthy and herbaceous, the fragrance draws on native Australian plants with longstanding uses as bush foods, bringing a grounded botanical character to the collection.

Its companion, Candle Seven, comes in our Steel hue and brings together fig, Geraldton wax, aniseed myrtle and saltbush. The aromatic foliage of Geraldton wax and the distinctive character of aniseed myrtle give the fragrance its own character.

Both candles are blended from natural soy, beeswax and non-toxic paraffin wax, with a burn time of 80 hours.

Made to be kept

Each candle is poured into a refillable Mud Australia porcelain vessel, handmade in our Sydney studio using porcelain clay sourced from Limoges, France.

Pigment is added directly to the porcelain body to achieve the depth of colour, while the interior is finished with a clear glaze. Made in small batches, each vessel carries subtle variations and traces of the hand-finishing process.

Designed to extend beyond the life of the candle, the porcelain vessel can be refilled with wax once finished or repurposed as a small planter, catchall or everyday object for the home. Candle refills will be available through Mud Australia in the coming weeks.
