Celebrating 30 Years of Mud Australia

October 2024 marks 30 years of Mud Australia. To celebrate this significant milestone, we're reflecting on everything that has made the journey so special.

As one of Australia’s longest-standing craft-based businesses, Mud Australia’s evolution over the last three decades reflects where it all began – a studio garage in 1994 where Founder & Creative Director, Shelley Simpson, first discovered her passion for pottery.

On October 10th, we’re excited to open the doors to our twelfth retail location, welcoming a brand new Mud Australia store in Islington, UK. This moment is particularly special for us as it coincides with Mud Australia’s 30th anniversary. To mark this milestone, we’re celebrating in style with cake and champagne at all of our stores around the world—Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, London, New York, and Los Angeles. These celebrations will kick off a year-long journey filled with exclusive product launches, creative collaborations, special events, and more.

Looking back on our journey, I feel immensely grateful. It’s been very special to work with so many wonderful people growing this business and connecting with our communities around the world. Our customers have been incredibly supportive. I’m very thankful.

Shelley Simpson

Craft, community, and conscious design

What began as Shelley Simpson’s personal passion for pottery has evolved into something much bigger—a brand that’s become known and loved for its minimalist, handmade porcelain tableware and homewares. By 1999, Mud Australia had developed its signature collection, a curated range of dinnerware, serving pieces, and essentials for entertaining. Since then, we’ve slowly expanded with thoughtful additions in both shape and colour, allowing for even more creativity and customisation. In 2020, Mud Australia became a certified climate and carbon-neutral business—something we’re particularly proud of. But we don’t rest on our laurels. We’re constantly exploring new ways to innovate in sustainability, from refining our manufacturing processes to making more eco-conscious choices in our materials and operations. Our commitment to mindful production is ongoing, and we strive to make a positive impact in everything we do.

12 stores across Australia, the US and the UK

Since 2001, we have thoughtfully built 12 Mud Australia stores around the globe. Each store serves as a unique community hub where we can connect with the people who buy our products. These spaces allow us to be playful and creative with how we display our collection and tell our brand story.

My design process is quite personal—I make everything for myself first. If it works in my life, I then put it into production. For me, design is an inseparable blend of form and function, and sustainability is at the core of everything we do.

Entirely Australian Made

Our collection has always been crafted by hand in Sydney’s inner west. Producing locally is essential to our commitment to sustainability, quality, and innovation. By keeping our manufacturing close to home, we not only reduce our carbon footprint but also ensure that each piece meets our high standards of craftsmanship. This local approach allows us to innovate continually while supporting our community and maintaining the integrity of our designs.

Cake stand

To celebrate this milestone year, the Mud Australia Cake Stand has been re-released from the archives as a limited edition of 100 pieces, available globally through all retail stores.

Throughout October, friends of the brand will share their cake creations on the Cake Stand, joining the celebration across social media.
