Celebrating New York City’s Thriving Art & Design Community with NYCxDESIGN Festival and Atlantic Avenue ArtWalk

Following the past month, Mud Australia has taken part in special events and activations including Atlantic Avenue ArtWalk, an inspiring public art exhibit, and the NYCxDESIGN Festival, during internationally-acclaimed design week.

Guided by our core values of craft and community, our aim was to shine a spotlight on local Brooklyn artists, makers and business owners throughout the month of May.

Atlantic Avenue ArtWalk

Mud Australia partnered with artist James Gallagher, bringing a special showcase of his work to our Brooklyn storefront (402 Atlantic Avenue) for the annual Atlantic Avenue ArtWalk. Organised by the Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corp, this free public art exhibit stretches 1.5-miles through Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill and Downtown Brooklyn in celebration of local artists and merchants who enhance and enrich their communities. A growing design destination, Atlantic Avenue is home to leading several independent shops with one-of-a-kind tabletop, decor, furnishings and more.

Mud Talks: The Retail Renaissance Fostering Community and Conscious Consumption

Mud Australia hosted a panel talk and reception at Café Kitsuné in celebration of NYCxDESIGN and the inaugural Atlantic Avenue Day of Design. Moderated by Brooklynite and Executive Editor of ELLE DecorIngrid Abramovitch, this panel brought together notable voices from the Atlantic Avenue design community including Shelley Simpson, our Founder and Creative Director; Michele Varian, whose eponymous home goods store Michele Varian Shop & Design serves as a treasure trove for one-of-a-kind products, and Sarah Zames, Founder & Principal of the design firm General Assembly and Co-Founder of Assembly Line, a curated shop for home renovation materials, furniture and lighting from a global roster of independent brands and designers.

Open to both the public and trade, the panel explored the current landscape for independent retailers, looking at Atlantic Avenue as a case study – a growing hub for small, creative businesses that help foster community and more conscious consumption. The talk will also cover the distinct challenges and opportunities the panelists have faced navigating retail, and the future they see with this area and others like it, making a compelling case to shop local for stronger communities and a more sustainable future.

Since opening our Brooklyn retail store on Atlantic Avenue in 2017, we’ve been honored to be part of such a thriving group of local artisans, designers and entrepreneurs who share many of our values – from embracing sustainability and circular design to honoring timeless traditions of craft and great design,” says Shelley Simpson, Creative Director and Founder of Mud Australia. “These connections inspired us to celebrate our creative community this spring and reflect on our future as collective stewards of this beloved neighborhood.
