Mud Talks: The Retail Renaissance Fostering Community and Conscious Consumption
Mud Australia hosted a panel talk and reception at Café Kitsuné in celebration of NYCxDESIGN and the inaugural Atlantic Avenue Day of Design. Moderated by Brooklynite and Executive Editor of ELLE DecorIngrid Abramovitch, this panel brought together notable voices from the Atlantic Avenue design community including Shelley Simpson, our Founder and Creative Director; Michele Varian, whose eponymous home goods store Michele Varian Shop & Design serves as a treasure trove for one-of-a-kind products, and Sarah Zames, Founder & Principal of the design firm General Assembly and Co-Founder of Assembly Line, a curated shop for home renovation materials, furniture and lighting from a global roster of independent brands and designers.
Open to both the public and trade, the panel explored the current landscape for independent retailers, looking at Atlantic Avenue as a case study – a growing hub for small, creative businesses that help foster community and more conscious consumption. The talk will also cover the distinct challenges and opportunities the panelists have faced navigating retail, and the future they see with this area and others like it, making a compelling case to shop local for stronger communities and a more sustainable future.
