Colour is such an important part of your work. What role does colour play in your own home?
Colour has always been one of the most life-enhancing aspects of being alive. Fundamentally, it makes me happy. It brings energy, atmosphere and emotion into a space, and I couldn’t imagine my home without it.
At home, I’m drawn to rich, saturated shades, wonderful emerald greens, a beautiful Sèvres porcelain blue - balanced with plenty of white. I love the way these colours work together to create a home that feels both uplifting and calm.
For someone who is afraid of introducing more colour at home, where would you suggest they begin?
I would suggest identifying a colour palette of three or four shades. Ensure one of them is neutral and work with patterns within this colour family.
I am known for my use of strong, confident tones, but in my opinion what makes them work is the way they are carefully considered with whites and naturals. These act as a counterbalance and prevent colour from becoming too overwhelming, controlling its strength and providing a harmonious note.
What are the elements you think make a house feel truly personal and lived-in?
I believe it’s crucial to mix textures if you are going to create an interesting and beautiful environment. A home needs layers; it needs to work for many different purposes. A deft mix of colour, pattern and texture that all work in harmony, in my mind, adds so much personality and spirit.
What is your top tip for bringing more character into a home?
The structure of a room, any architectural or period features, for example - can really be accentuated by an interesting mix of fabrics. Think of it as a fresh, modern and beautiful juxtaposition.
